HP ProBook 645 G1 — a 2012 business chassis on weak AMD silicon

The ProBook 645 G1 is a 2012 small-form business laptop built on AMD's A4-4300M — an entry dual-core APU from the Trinity generation. At $127 it sits 57% below the business-class median of $297. The profile is uniformly weak: graphics 0, reliability 14 against a 42.5 median, with the low price itself the only figure above the class floor.

The A4 problem

Two modules at up to 3 GHz sound reasonable on paper, but the A4-4300M was AMD's entry business die — slow cores, minimal graphics, and a CPU-side score that registers at the bottom of every comparison. The ProBook chassis around it was solid business metal for its day; the silicon inside was always the cheapest configuration HP offered in this line. The gap between chassis quality and compute capability is the defining fact of this machine.

What it can and cannot do

Documents, email and light browsing remain within tolerance — with patience. Gaming and GPU-accelerated work of any kind are out of scope with graphics 0. Reliability 14 versus a 42.5 median adds the service-life caveat on top: this is a thirteen-year-old entry configuration. The honest role is a bottom-budget office terminal while it lasts.

Price trajectory

From an original $1,300 to $127 today at 5.95% per year, with a further projection to $113 (an 11.55% drop) over two years. The curve has flattened at the floor; remaining value loss is small, matching the small remaining utility.

Where it sits against peers

Pricier neighbors are the ProBook 6465b ($140) and ThinkPad L540 ($137) — both with meaningfully stronger CPU platforms for a $10-13 premium. No cheaper options appear in the band, which says the 645 G1 already sits at the business-class price floor.

Bottom line

Business chassis quality at entry silicon price: the enclosure outlived the compute years ago. Worth considering only at the absolute bottom of the business band for undemanding office duty — and the small premium to a 6465b or L540 for a faster processor is money well spent.
