ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3rd Gen — the classic carbon ultrabook, RAM-limited by today's bars

The X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (2015) was Lenovo's flagship business ultrabook: a Core i5-5300U in the famous carbon chassis, here with 16GB of RAM at $152 — half the $297 business-class median. The measured picture needs one honest asterisk: graphics reads 45.85 against a 3.84 class median — a top-quartile placing that reflects scoring the Broadwell iGPU against an iGPU-dominated class, not a gaming credential. The ok-flags are the real envelope. The named weakness is RAM: 16GB against a 40GB class median, a 60% shortfall against modern expectations.

What it does well

By ok-flags it clears minimum settings for Overwatch, Grand Theft Auto V, and Rainbow Six Siege — era-appropriate titles at low settings, the honest ceiling of a 2015 iGPU. The Carbon chassis was the lightest premium business machine of its year, and the keyboard set the standard. For typing-forward work the platform still holds up.

The trade-offs, stated plainly

The 16GB ceiling is the named weakness: fine for documents and browsers, tight for heavy development or many-VM use. Reliability at 21 versus 42.5 marks a nine-year-old platform — battery and wear parts are deep into aging. The dual-core Broadwell CPU is office-adequate and no more; treat any graphics expectation as era-scoped.

Price trajectory

From a $1,300 launch position it has declined at about 6.9% per year to $152, with a projected $132 in two years (13% further). Flagship-name depreciation has flattened to utility pricing.

Against its neighbors

An HP EliteBook 850 G2 at $172 and a Dell Vostro 3560 at $174 sit above; a Latitude E5450 at $136 and an EliteBook 840 G2 at $135 below. The EliteBook 840 G2 at $135 is the same-silicon same-tier rival for $17 less — chassis preference and condition decide between them.

Bottom line

Worth its price for the buyer who wants the classic Carbon feel — light, stiff, excellent keyboard — for light duty, with the 45.85 graphics placing read correctly as flattery rather than fact. The RAM ceiling and platform age are the honest limits.

🤔 How to choose

Universal advice for any use case.

  • Reliability vs price: reliability (median 42.5) ↔ price (median 297.4).
  • Weight vs CPU: mobility (median 60) ↔ overall performance (median 41.5).
